SYLLABUS for Math 110

Summer Semester 2002

Class meetings:    MTWThF 10:00 – 12:05 in E-5.

 

 

 

Prerequisite:          A minimum grade of “C” in MATH 60 or eligibility determined through the math replacement process.

 

 

Text & materials:    College Algebra, by Aufmann, Barker, and Nation, 4th Edition. (required). There is also a Student Solutions Manual that may be helpful (optional). 

Graphing calculator is also required for this class. TI-83 or 85 is highly recommended. Calculators that are capable of performing symbolic manipulation will not be allowed on the exams.

 

 

Expectations:        ·  Spend at least 2 hours outside of class in preparation for each hour in class.

·  Attend all class meetings, read the textbook, do homework assignments, take all tests.

                            ·  Participate in class discussions.

·  Ask questions if you don’t understand how to solve homework problems.

                            ·  Seek help in timely manner. (See Resources below)

 

 

The course:           We will tentatively be covering chapters 1 – 8.  Any omissions or additions will be announced later.  At the end of each chapter, there is an Exploring Concepts with Technology section.  Some of these may be assigned for extra credit.

 

 

Homework:            Each section of the textbook has problems that designed to build and reinforce your understanding and skill in that topic therefore homework will be assigned daily.  It is essential to your success in this course that you devote the necessary time daily to keep up with your assignment.  The material in the textbook should be read before attempting to complete the assignment.  All homework assignments that are assigned prior to the test will be collected on the day of the test.  I expect your homework to be organized, legible, and the assignment numbers are highlighted or no credit will be given. Papers that are difficult for me to follow will be returned without graded.

 

 

Tests:                   There are four one-hour tests. All tests will have not only materials from the current chapter(s) but may include materials from the previous chapters.  No makeup tests unless the student has a valid excuse and notifies me prior to the exam.  I won’t drop any test score, but I will replace the lowest test score with the score of your final exam.  Dates of these tests will be announced later.

                            Tentative schedule for the tests:

 

                                    Test 1.  Chapters 1, 2.                Tuesday, July 2.

                                    Test 2.  Chapters 3, 5.                Friday, July 12.

                                    Test 3.  Chapters 4, 6.                Monday, July 22.

                                    Test 4.  Chapters 7, 8.                Wednesday, July 31.

 

 

Final:                    The final exam is comprehensive.  The Final is on Friday August 2, 10:00 – 12:00.

 

 

Evaluation &

Grading Policy:      The semester grade will be determined as follows:

 

                                    Homework:                                10%

                                    Tests:                                       70% (17.5% each)

                                    Final:                                        20%

 

                                    Percentage earned         Course grade

                                         90% or up                            A

                                         80% or up                            B

                                         68% or up                            C

                                         55% or up                            D         

                                         Below 55%                           F

 

 

Cheating:               Please see the Code of Conduct in the Palomar College Catalog with regards to Behavior Expectations.  If you are caught cheating on a test, you will get zero point on that test.  If you are caught cheating a second time, you will get an “F” in the class.

 

 

Adds/Drops:          · Last day to add is Monday, June 29.  To add a course, use eReg at www.palomar.edu or PAR.

                            · Last day to drop without notation on you record is Friday, July 05.  Instructor’s signature is not required. (Use eReg at www.palomar.edu or PAR to drop.)

                            · Last day to change from credit to audit is July 08.

                            · Last day to drop with a “W” on you record is July 15. Instructor’s signature is not required.  After this date an evaluative grade will be given.

 

 

Resources:            Keeping up is very important.  Help is available if you feel lost or behind.  The resources are:

·  Math Learning Center: Drop-in tutoring is available in the Math Center (E2).  The Center is open Mon. through Fri. 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.  It is free, please come to the Math Center for a complete detail.

·  Study group: I highly recommend forming a study group with other classmates. (No more than 3 people).  I don’t mind if you collaborate with others on the homework assignments, as long as you understand what you are doing.  If you do not understand what you are writing it’s going to show that on your tests.
