TEXT: Elayn Martin-Gay, Prealgebra, Fifth Edition. This book can be
purchased at the bookstore or an electronic version can be purchased online.
OTHER MATERIAL: Graph paper, and a scientific
calculator (I highly recommend a Texas Instruments 30.)
SUBJECT MATTER:
In this course we will study the basic arithmetic operations
and integers, fractions, decimals,
percents, ratio and proportion, and
some basic geometric concepts.
PREREQUISITES:
An appropriate
score on the Placement Test or self placement.
STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITY:
Being a student is a
full-time job. It is each student’s job to learn. The student has the responsibility to participate
in class, ask relevant questions, seek help when needed, and submit assignments
when they are due. Expect to spend a minimum of 15 -20 hours per week studying
mathematics.
GRADING:
Grades will be determined by
performance on four exams, homework and quizzes and a comprehensive final exam.
Exam One 16%
Exam Two 16%
Exam Three 16%
Exam Four 16%
Homework and Quizzes 16%
Final Exam 20%
The
grading scale is as follows:
A 90% - 100% CR 70% - 100%
B 80% - 89% NCR 0% - 69%
C 70% - 79%
D 60% - 69%
F 0% - 59%
I strongly
urge you to take this class Credit/No
Credit. This will not allow the class to affect your
GPA and will allow you to continue on to the next class as long as you earn a
70% or better. Only some military
personnel cannot do this but otherwise you should seriously consider this
option. You only need to go to
admissions and fill out a form to change your grade status from a letter grade
to Credit/No Credit.
ONLINE COMPONENT:
Throughout the semester you
will be working on a computer using the MyMathLab
website. This website will contain the
content of the course and has been set up so that you can follow my
syllabus. You gain access to the site
using an access code that comes with the purchase of a book or can be ordered
online. To purchase an access code online go to http://www.coursecompass.com/
and use the course id clark65395. You will complete and turn in all homework
and quizzes on this site. Your computer skills need to be good enough to do
work on the computer and communicate clearly using email and the discussion
board. You will be required to
participate in the discussion board throughout the semester.
ON CAMPUS COMPONENT:
You will be required to take
4 exams and a final exam on the San Marcos Main Campus in the math center in
E-2. These exams will be proctored and
will require a photo id to start the exam.
You will be given a couple of days window to
come in and take the exam. You should
plan ahead to make time to take the exam before the deadline. The math center is open from 9am to 8pm
Monday through Thursday and 9am to 3pm Friday.
The math center is not open
on the weekend.
HELP:
If you need help, get it right away. Don’t wait until it is too late. I will be available during office hours,
through email and by appointment. I
encourage you to use the discussion board and ask questions for other students
and me to answer. My email is a great
way to get in touch with me all week and I will get back to you within 24 hours
if possible. Free tutoring is available in the Math Center in E-2, however you must register for a zero unit, no
cost to you tutoring course N BASC 202 (Class #76121 ). Free tutoring is also available in the library tutoring center. You will find
that working in student study groups is an excellent way to gain greater
understanding of the material.
CHEATING POLICY:
Any student found cheating would receive a grade of zero
for that test. If cheating occurs a
second time, the student will be dropped from the course.
