Math 141 — Calculus With Analytic Geometry II Summer 2003

Section #50314 8:00-9:50 AM, MTWTh, Room E-8
4 Units Mike Kelly mkelly@palomar.edu

Course Description
Math 141 is a continuation from Math 140, extending the fundamental principles of calculus to methods and applications of integration, sequences and series, analytic geometry, and polar and parametric equations. This course will develop the knowledge and skills in calculus necessary for a student going on to advanced courses in math, science and engineering. It will also enhance the student's awareness and general knowledge of contemporary mathematics, science and technology.

Text and Materials
Calculus, Larson/Hostetler/Edwards, seventh edition. No supplemental material is necessary for this course. Each student is required to have (and know how to use) a graphing calculator.

Policies
• The course grade for Math 141 is based on a total of 570 points: 100pts. for each test (3), 15pts. - each homework (4), 60pts. – additional assignments, 150 pts. - Final Exam. The lowest of the four test scores is dropped. The final exam may not be dropped. (The final exam is over the entire course). The course grade is determined by total points on tests and homework, specifically:
570-502pts. "A", 501-435 "B", 434-367 "C", 366-300 "D", 299- "F".
• Test scores are based on percent correct. Considerable partial credit is given, so always show your work clearly. Homework is assigned in class and is due at the beginning of each test period. Homework is graded on 3 problems selected from the assigned work. Completion of (or righteous attempt at completing) all 3 -a grade of 15pts., completion of 2 -10pts., completion of 1 - 5pts., else - 0pts.
Additional assignments are given in class and will total 60 pts.
• You are not graded on attendance even though attendance is recorded at each class session. However, success in Math 141 will require virtually constant attendance. Your help in keeping accurate attendance records is appreciated.
• If you can't attend when a test is scheduled, that test is dropped. Regardless of circumstances, absences for subsequent tests will receive a grade of zero. Any incidence of cheating (such as copying from a classmate's test paper) shall result in a course grade of “F” for Math 141. At all times, class will begin promptly at 8:00 AM.
